The aim of this thesis is twofold : (i) fill a lack of knowledge about the spatial coherence and seasonal predictability of the intraseasonal characteristics (ISC) of the soudano-sahelian rainy season. International audience; There is empirical evidence that sea surface temperatures (SST) exert a prominent role on the WAM, particularly over the Atlantic ocean where they can act to modify the location of the ITCZ and moisture advection. However, the role of the Mediterranean sea has been studied more recently. Rowell (2003) has first shown that the basin could play a significant role on the monsoon in modifying the moisture transport and convergence of humidity. Using GCM simulations, he demonstrated that warmer (colder) than normal SST on the Mediterranean sea is associated with a more/less intense monsoon in the Sahel region. Following the recommendations proposed by the AMMA community three main objectives were set for this research. The first was to analyze the direct outputs of general circulation models of the atmosphere used in the DEMETER project. The second was to propose a new method for predicting seasonal rainfall in the Sahel using the direct outputs of GCMs the best simulated, that is to say, those related to atmospheric dynamics which explains the penetration of the West African monsoon in the continent, and therefore, the total rainfall during the monsoon season of boreal summer.
